Why stay away from foods with preservatives?

Ever wondered why some foods have ‘No Preservatives added’ printed boldly on them? It’s because it is widely known that health-conscious folks shy away from these as if it were the plague. Preservatives are the extra ingredients added to keep foods from decomposing quickly and these ingredients are usually chemicals. Some of the common preservatives we find in our daily foods are sulphites, Sodium benzoate, BHA and BHT, Sodium Nitrate, Sodium Nitrite.

Sulphites

 

 

 

Sulphites are used in wines and to preserve dried fruits and dried potato products. White wine is richer in sulphite than red wine. They are added to stop discolouration of the products.

Too much sulphite too often is linked with asthma-like allergies and sometimes severe allergic reactions. The reactions are more in asthmatics. So, the next time you pick up that glass of wine or reach for the preserved dried fruit packet, remember to check the sulphite content.

Sodium benzoate

 

 

 

Benzoic acid, found naturally in some fruits, when combined with Sodium hydroxide becomes Sodium benzoate. This Sodium Benzoate is a widely used preservative in acidic foods like vinegar, carbonated drinks, jams and fruit juices.

Though it is considered safe in a tiny quantity, it is something to look out for when found in a metal container. They can react with the interior of the metal container and affect your health. We’d say throw out the canned juices and go for fresh fruit juices. Yummy and healthy!

BHA and BHT

 

 

 

 

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are preservatives usually found in cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. They have the tendency to alter the neurological system of the body and cause cancer when ingested too often.

Sodium Nitrate/Sodium Nitrite

 

 

 

This is a preservative mainly used in processed meats, be it pork, beef or fish. This chemical brings out the colour in the meat and makes it look fresh and appealing. The body, when exposed to this preservative, is a step closer to cancer. It is one of the main causes of stomach cancer and colon cancer. The human digestive system does not react very well to consuming this. So ditch the frozen meats, take a quick walk to the market and buy fresh meat.
